Description:

Alice, a professional mother of one, is hosting a playdate with friends at her upscale London home when a disturbed man breaks in. With her child in the next room, Alice panics and kills him—an act later ruled to have been in self-defense.

Everyone tries to encourage Alice to move on with her life—but with strange comments appearing online, a mysterious phone call telling her all is not as it seems, and her husband, nanny, and friends behaving strangely, Alice finds herself drawn to the mystery of who her intruder really was. As she digs deeper, she discovers a trail of dark secrets that spiral closer to home than she ever could have imagined.

Adele’s Review:

3.5 Rounded up to 4 Stars

I looked forward to reading The Break-In since I’d enjoyed Katherine Faulkner’s previous release The Other Mothers. The Break-In is well-written, has good twists and turns, and enough red herrings to pepper the mystery with surprises.

This reviewer would have rated the novel a solid four stars if the protagonist, Alice, hadn’t made poor judgement calls throughout most of the story. At the opening of the book, she has the absolute right to fend off a home intruder. But her decision- making afterward is so flawed I almost stopped reading. However, in order to provide a fair review, I finished the book. I’m pleased to say that despite my misgivings the author ties up all the loose ends and gives readers a satisfying conclusion.
