Description:
Full of creeping dread and suffocating unease, Dark Is When the Devil Comes is an atmospheric and chilling novel from Something in the Walls author Daisy Pearce.
The woods are known as the place to avoid. What goes in, doesn’t come out.
Hazel has been gone from her small hometown of Idless in the English countryside for years. Now returned in the wake of a traumatic divorce and crumbling personal life, her simple plans are to lay low at her parents’ vacated house, reconnect with her prickly sister Cathy, and slowly get back on her feet.
She’s his captive but something has come home with her.
Cathy is surprised when Hazel doesn’t show. Their relationship strained from a fallout half a decade ago, she didn’t expect them to get back into a sisterly rhythm…though she hadn’t counted on Hazel bailing, either.
But something isn’t adding up. Other people in town whisper of a threat that can’t be shaken. The woods are known for being restless. And Cathy knows the old saying.
If you go looking for trouble, you just might find it.
Adele’s Review:
THIS BOOK SCARED THE HELL OUT OF ME! Racing heart, dry mouth, shallow breathing. I loved it!
Daisy Pearce is a masterful writer. This reviewer realized that truth after reading Pearce’s previous horror novel Something In The Walls (5 Stars, 2/25/25). I was so impressed with the author’s storytelling and writing ability I was anxious to read her new release Dark Is When The Devil Comes. OMGoodness the novel is so good I lost sleep. Some of that is my fault, because I always read in bed at night to relax, but the suspense in this book made relaxing a (gulp) challenge. I recommend cuddling on the couch with your favorite blanket with all the lights on for this novel. During the day.
Of course, we know the story is fictional and the scary paranormal parts are (probably) not real. But the crazed kidnapper in the abandoned house in the woods seemed all too real to me. And that, dear readers, made my blood run cold. I finished the book in record time so that I could relax again. Horror lovers, don’t miss this one!
